Dendrobates auratus “Pena Blanca”

Natural History

The Pena Blanca is a locality morph of Dendrobates auratus native to the tropical rainforests of Costa Rica. In the wild, these frogs are found in warm, humid lowland and foothill forests where they inhabit leaf litter, dense vegetation, and heavily planted forest floors.

Description

This morph is known for its unique metallic bronze and white coloration paired with either marbling or reticulated pattern. Young Pena Blanca exhibit a silver and black coloration and as they mature into adult hood they will begin to demonstrate the bronze and white coloration. As with most auratus, individual patterning can vary slightly between frogs.

Social Behavior

Best kept as pairs or small groups in appropriately sized enclosures. Dendrobates auratus can show mild territorial behavior, but Pena Blanca are generally well-suited for group housing when adequate space and sight breaks are provided.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair, with larger enclosures preferred for small groups.
