Dendrobates tinctorius “Azureus”

Natural History

The Azureus is a locality form of Dendrobates tinctorius native to a small region of southern Suriname. In the wild, these frogs inhabit warm, humid rainforest environments where they are commonly found among leaf litter, fallen logs, and dense vegetation on the forest floor. Their habitat experiences consistent moisture and stable tropical temperatures year-round.

Description

Azureus are renowned for their brilliant cobalt-blue coloration accented by irregular black spotting and patterning. Their vivid color and bold personality have made them one of the most iconic and recognizable dart frogs in the hobby. Individual frogs may vary slightly in the amount and distribution of black markings.

Social Behavior

Best kept as pairs. Like most tinctorius, they can display territorial behavior, particularly between females, so adequate space, visual barriers, and multiple hiding areas are important for long-term success.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair.
