Natural History

The Tadó locality of Oophaga histrionica originates from the Chocó region of western Colombia. In the wild, these frogs inhabit warm, humid rainforest environments with dense vegetation, abundant leaf litter, and consistently high humidity. Like other members of the histrionica complex, they are closely associated with pristine tropical forest habitats.

Description

This locality is known for its stunning high-contrast coloration, typically displaying a bronze or tan base color adorned with vibrant orange spotting and patterning. Individual frogs can exhibit significant variation in both color intensity and pattern, making each animal uniquely beautiful. Their bold appearance and rarity have made them one of the most sought-after dart frogs in the hobby.

Social Behavior

Best kept as established pairs. Oophaga histrionica are territorial by nature, and group housing is generally not recommended. Providing ample cover and visual barriers can help reduce stress and promote natural behavior.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair. Larger, heavily planted vivariums are preferred to provide additional security, environmental stability, and opportunities for natural behaviors.
