Natural History
The Bastimentos Cemetery locality is a color morph of Oophaga pumilio native to Bastimentos Island in the Bocas del Toro region of Panama. In the wild, these frogs inhabit humid lowland rainforest environments where they are typically found in leaf litter, low vegetation, and shaded forest floor microhabitats with high moisture and stable temperatures.
Description
This locality is known for its vivid red to orange body coloration, often paired with darker limbs or subtle pattern variations depending on lineage and locality line. Like most pumilio, individuals can vary slightly in intensity and tone, with juveniles developing deeper coloration as they mature.
Social Behavior
Best kept as established pairs. Oophaga pumilio are highly territorial compared to other dart frog species, and group housing is not recommended due to aggression risks outside of breeding pairs.
Minimum Enclosure Size
A minimum of18” x 18” x 18”is recommended for a pair.
