Natural History

The Loma Colubre locality is a color morph of Oophaga pumilio native to the Bocas del Toro region of Panama. In the wild, these frogs inhabit humid tropical rainforests where they are found on the forest floor among leaf litter, roots, and low vegetation in warm, moisture-stable environments.

Description

This locality is known for its yellow to reddish-orange head contrasted against a vivid blue to black body, and can occasionally display striking purple or blue highlights. Like other pumilio, individuals can show natural variation in tone and intensity, with coloration becoming more defined as they mature.

Social Behavior

Best kept as established pairs. Oophaga pumilio are highly territorial and should not be group housed, as aggression outside of pairs is common.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair.
