Ranitomeya benedicta “Pampa Hermosa”

Natural History

The Pampa Hermosa locality of Ranitomeya benedicta is native to the lowland rainforests of the Pampas del Sacramento in Northeastern Peru. In the wild, these frogs inhabit warm, humid forest environments where they spend much of their time in bromeliads, tree holes, and other elevated microhabitats. Their semi-arboreal nature makes them well adapted to utilizing vertical space within the rainforest.

Description

This locality is highly sought after for its striking coloration, typically displaying a vibrant redhead and upper back separated by a thick black band accompanied by dark blue limbs and lower body. Their bold colors and active behavior make them a standout species in well-planted display vivariums. 

Social Behavior

Can be kept as pairs or in small groups when provided with adequate space and multiple breeding and retreat sites. As with most thumbnail dart frogs, occasional territorial behavior may occur, particularly during breeding, but they generally coexist well in appropriately designed enclosures. 

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair and/or small groups. For larger groups a bigger enclosure is preferred to provide additional space, visual barriers, and breeding opportunities.
