Ranitomeya fantastica “Lowland”

Natural History

The Lowland locality of Ranitomeya fantastica is native to the tropical rainforests of northern Peru. In the wild, these frogs inhabit warm, humid forest environments where they utilize bromeliads, tree holes, and other elevated microhabitats for shelter, breeding, and tadpole development. Their semi-arboreal lifestyle makes them particularly well-suited to vertically oriented vivariums.

Description

This locality is known for its striking orange to yellow-orange body, contrasted by bold black patterning and vibrant blue legs marked with dark spotting or reticulation. Their intricate coloration and active behavior make them one of the most visually impressive thumbnail dart frogs available in the hobby.

Social Behavior

Can be kept as pairs or in small groups when provided with adequate space, visual barriers, and multiple breeding sites. While generally peaceful, territorial behavior may occasionally occur during breeding periods.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair and/or small groups. For larger groups a bigger enclosure is preferred to provide additional space, visual barriers, and breeding opportunities.
