Ranitomeya variabilis “Southern”

Natural History

The Southern locality of Ranitomeya variabilis is native to the tropical rainforests of Peru. They inhabit montane regions of the Andean foothills of Peru, and are found farther south in that region. In the wild, these frogs inhabit warm, humid forest environments where they utilize bromeliads, tree holes, and other phytotelmata for breeding and tadpole development. Their semi-arboreal nature allows them to make extensive use of both vertical and horizontal space within the rainforest.

Description

This locality is known for its intricate patterning and striking contrast, typically displaying a vivid green body with black spotting adorned with light blue legs with black spotting. The Southern form is highly prized for its detailed markings and active daytime behavior, making it an exceptional display species for planted vivariums.

Social Behavior

Can be kept as pairs or in small groups when provided with adequate space, visual barriers, and multiple breeding sites. They are generally peaceful, though minor territorial interactions may occur, particularly during breeding periods.

Minimum Enclosure Size

A minimum of 18” x 18” x 18” is recommended for a pair and/or small groups. For larger groups a bigger enclosure is preferred to provide additional space, visual barriers, and breeding opportunities.
